It’s a long story. My first job was with a firm that was in the middle of the business process outsourcing business. I was the lead engineer. I did everything from developing, to designing, to development, to designing, to developing, to designing, to… well you get the idea. The company was successful, and it went bankrupt. I worked in a different industry (Internet) but my experience there was not the same.

I never saw that as a problem because I assumed that once you become an engineer you’ll do everything you do when you’re doing an Internet job. If you start working in a company that is in a different business, you’ll get a lot more experience in that job, and you’ll have a broader range of skills, so you’ll be able to do much more at a later point.

I think sites are generally run by smart people in similar industries. There are a lot of smart people in sites like Google, and theyre able to do a lot of things because they hire and build a team that has the same sort of skills. So they will usually be able to do a lot of the same things that I do.

As a site reliability engineer, you might not have the skills you would as a network engineer, but you’ll have the skills you’ll need for other things, including running a site. As a site reliability engineer, you’ll be the guy in the back who keeps the lights on and the sprinklers are working. As a network engineer, you’ll be the guy who’s fixing a network and making sure that it runs smoothly.

We’ve got a couple of examples of the various methods of hiring site reliability engineers.

I don’t know what this means, but if you think about it, when it comes to the job of an internet engineer, you’re almost always going to be a website engineer. You have to be a great site engineer, no matter where your site is going to be. You get those people who are really good at their job and are going to make sure that you make it good.
